Students of Southeast and Northwest Elementary School, in grades preschool through third, recently participated in the North Adams Community Schools Annual Bus Safety Coloring Contest following the NACS transportation department’s Annual Bus Safety Training program.
“Each year, we receive so many beautiful entries from our bus safety coloring contest,” stated Vicki Girard, transportation administrator. “We are proud of all of the students to take part in bus safety awareness and participate in our annual coloring contest.”
To participate, each student was given a coloring page of a bus displayed in the center of the “danger zone,” a concept that the students learned during their annual day of training. “We teach our students that to avoid the ‘danger zone’ surrounding the bus, students must remain at least 10 giant steps away from the bus,” added Girard. “It is extremely important that we keep children safe in and around busses at all times. In order to do so, we emphasize the importance of following bus safety rules. They are important reminders that we are proud to teach our students about every year.”
Once all of the submissions were received, the transportation department made a final selection for one overall coloring contest winner from each classroom in each grade. “As we were greeting the students with their bus safety contest certificate, a couple of our winners were excited to tell us that they had won for three, even four years in a row,” Girard shared. “They are defending champs; and pretty great artists, I’d say.”
The event is made possible through the support of Pizza King of Decatur. Each student that is selected as his or her classroom winner receives a gift certificate to Pizza King of Decatur.
“Steve Christner of Pizza King in Decatur has been a proud supporter of our annual bus safety training program for many years,” stated Leah Thompson, communications manager of North Adams Community Schools. “We extend our sincerest gratitude to him for making this an exciting and rewarding experience for our students.”
Congratulations to all students that participated and a special congratulations to this year’s coloring contest winners! “Enjoy your gift certificate to Pizza King!” Thompson exclaimed.
